Mark Williams (aka) "The Other Brother"
I am a self-taught artist working
in various mediums for over 23 years. I have been referred to as both an
outsider and a folk artist.
I started out working in wood and acrylics; I now
work in clay. I use stoneware as well as Georgia red clay for my work. My "folk"
pottery consists mainly of face jugs, bottles, and sculpture. My sculptures are
little people, angels, devils, crabs, masks and wall hangings. I make these by
altering wheel thrown forms. I alter my shapes by pushing the clay and
stretching it from the inside out rather than adding clay to the outside. My
pottery is fired in a reduction atmosphere in a gas kiln.
My work is currently available at the
Spruill Gallery (Atlanta), Christopher Park Gallery (Greenville, S.C.), Around
Back at Rocky's Place, (Dawsonville, GA), and Brad Walker's Pottery (Dahloneg,
GA)
In 2006 I received 5 ribbons and 3 cash
awards at arts and craft shows for my pottery. The weekend of March 3 & 4, 2007,
I received 'Best of Show' award at the Jerry Brown Arts Festival in Hamilton,
AL. (Show was juried by Kentuck founder Georgine Clark)
Why "the other brother"?....I have 3 "other brothers"...they are
also self taught artists...Pat (works in found metal)....James David (paint and
wood carvings)....Indian Joe (wood)...and...my younger sister..."Sister
Mimi"...(paints in acrylic and found objects)....my uncle, the late Tubby Brown
was also a folk artist........
